Blizzard ‘Totally Open’ to Overwatch Mod Support

Blizzard is “totally open” to adding mod support to Overwatch, reveals game director Jeff Kaplan. The multiplayer shooter already seems to be popular with the mod community, with modders having added character Tracer to Street Fighter 5.

In a Q&A session with moderators from the the team-based shooter’s subreddit, Kaplan says that Blizzard “loves” the concept of modding and said that he tries to remind people that “DoTA, League of Legends and DoTA2 would not exist if it weren’t for our openness through people modding [Blizzard’s] stuff.” Dismissing suggestions that Blizzard has a “philosophical opposition” to modding, Kaplan says that the developer is “totally open” to adding mod support for Overwatch.

However, it could be a while until that happens. Kaplan points to “the amount of time for us to get all of our systems online, and the infrastructure, set up so that somebody could create something, modify it, have their own branch, check it in, test it,” and explains that that Blizzard is “pretty far from it” as a result.

Even though the developer is “100% onboard,” it could still take the company years to introduce Overwatch mod support for players. Especially as Kaplan would rather give players “hardcore tools” geared to professional or semi-professional modders than tools that everyone can use.

That lengthy time frame may be disappointing but for those already making the most of what Overwatch offers them, this is still great news. The creativity of the Overwatch community seems to have no limits as in addition to works of art, new stories, and all of the hilarious memes, players have also created brand new Overwatch game modes using tools and content already offered in the game.

Overwatch mod support could also give players plenty to do even when no official events or special game modes are being offered. In the same interview with the subreddit’s moderators, Kaplan explained that the Overwatch team will “refine” old events instead of just introducing new ones. While some were frustrated at the game director’s comments and the possibility that it could be a while until they see brand new seasonal events and content, the introduction of modding would be able to keep players entertained for years to come.

Keeping things feeling fresh and fun is important – but can be incredibly difficult – for multiplayer games like Overwatch to maintain over years. Introducing mod support could well extend the life of the game way beyond its competitors and fans will hope that Blizzard starts working on it sooner rather than later.

Overwatch is available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
