Out of the two dozen playable characters in Overwatch, Tracer and Winston have arguably shared most of the narrative spotlight since the game was released a year ago. However, the spotlight may soon be moving from the quippy time-traveller and genius armored gorilla to two heroes who have yet to play a significant part in the shooter’s narrative, Pharah and Symmetra.
In a new interview with Polygon, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan states that while Tracer and Winston have been essential characters in building the lore of the game and aren’t being sidelined any time soon, he’s eager to give characters like Pharah and Symmetra their turn in the spotlight. While Symmetra has been on the fringes of recent Overwatch events and narrative arcs, the turret-building prodigy has only (ironically) had a supporting role within the game’s overarching lore, having only been the central focus of one digital comic so far. Having said that, it appears the Overwatch team have some big plans for the hero soon as Kaplan teased that there’s a “pretty cool” character arc in the works.
“I worry about characters like Symmetra, I think we could do a lot more with her, and we have a pretty cool arc we’d like to see her go through.”
Given Symmetra’s smaller role in the narrative compared to other heroes, as well as taking into account that she has yet to even receive one Legendary skin in the past five Overwatch events, it is understandable why fans are hoping to see more of the support character as the game enters its second year.
As for Pharah, while she has received a bit more attention (and Legendary skins) than Symmetra, especially after the introduction of her mother, the support sniper Ana, the rocket-wielding warrior has also been a little shortchanged in Overwatch‘s overarching narrative. However, Kaplan is less worried about Pharah as there are apparently “huge plans” for her coming soon.
“Pharah is pretty underrepresented too, but we have huge plans for her, so I’m not worried about her.”
Given how each of the game’s 24 heroes are somehow linked to one another within the lore of Overwatch, it will be very interesting to see how Pharah and Symmetra ultimately fit into the shooter’s overarching narrative. As the game enters its second year and continues to grow within the community, perhaps we may find out some of Pharah and Symmetra’s new story arcs when the Overwatch Anniversary event starts on May 23.
Overwatch is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
